Graphics
Highlights
Nvidia nView
If you use the Nvidia nView desktop Manager, it must be configured such
that the nView Desktop Manager does not apply effects to Invenetor.exe.
- If you are using nView just to spread the display over multiple monitors,
it works fine.
- To use effects, Inventor must be excluded from the applications to which
the effects are applied.
- This is done by adding Inventor as an application using a custom
nView Desktop Manager settings.
- Then make the custom effect setting "Disabled".
- If nView effects are enabled for Inventor, either Inventor will
freeze or the nView effects will be disabled for all applications
when Inventor starts.
- Nvidia is working on this issue
Applications and hardware that Conflict with Inventor
JFax or Efax software:
Version 3.5 of eFax Messenger is compatible with Autodesk Inventor® 9
& 10.
Earlier versions of eFax Messenger are
not compatible with Autodesk Inventor®.
Workaround:
- Open Messenger Plus.
- Select HELP, LIVE MENU SETTINGS... from the menu bar.
- Select HIDE ALL.
- Select OK.
- Reboot
Google Desktop Search:
The Google Desktop search facility downloads an Excel AddIn which has a corrosive
effect on Inventor’s interaction with it’s Excel files (iPart,
Parameters, Positional Representations, etc). Google Inc has been informed
about this and a fix is expected. In the mean while, Inventor users are advised
to employ either of the two following techniques to disable the Google Excel
AddIn:
- Start Excel, and disable the Google AddIn using the Tools | COM AddIns
menu item. If this menu item does not show up then use the Tools | Customize
menu item and pull in the COM AddIns menu item from the Tools Category.
- Modify the following registry value from “3” to “2”:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\Excel\Addins\Office.Desktop.Google.com\LoadBehavior
Intel Graphics on the motherboard
The best advice is to use a Workstation card certified on this site. To use the
Intel 915G chipset check the certifications on this site. Please use the diver
we have
posted.
It is the first production driver from Intel. It was released on May 4, 2005.
All previous drivers were Alpha or Beta drivers. They should not be used.
The 915G chipset from Intel has been certified with limitations (Yellow).
Applications that Conflict
with Installation of Inventor
The file Riched20.dll cannot go through the "BlackIce" firewall
onto a system. The result: 1) An AutoCAD/MDT deployment image
cannot be built on a server running BlackIce. 2) An AutoCAD/MDT deployment
image cannot
be installed on a workstation running BlackIce. Workaround: Either disable
BlackIce for these operations or configure it to let this file pass. Support
at BlackIce has confirmed that this is intentional.
The Inventor installers in The Autodesk Inventor®
Series and Autodesk Inventor® Professional
packages are not Microsoft Logo Compliment. Inventor must not be
installed by Advertisement. If this is done, the product cannot
be uninstalled. This is a side effect of the technology that lets multiple
versions of Inventor run on the same workstation.
CAUTION:
Attempting to change
your mind while uninstalling Microsoft SQL, may leave SQL in a damaged
state. I was not able to recover from this problem, and restored my system
from a backup.
Starting with Flash 8a, the Flash player changes registry permissions such
that Inventor 10 has problems installing or uninstalling. See http://usa.autodesk.com/getdoc/id=TS1056239 for
the solution. This applies to both Inventor R10 and R11 installs.
Special Installation
Situations
To Avoid Reboots during a Deployment Install: Within the Inventor and the
Professional modules install process, both install third party software before
they install
the
Autodesk
products.
Sometimes,
the third party software may request to be
rebooted before it is used.
On some clean systems, the fact that we
do not reboot during the Inventor install process may cause an installation
error. The simple solution is to reboot and restart the installation. It should
complete correctly the second time.
The information below is presented for the system administrator who wants
to make sure all of these modules are pre-installed, thus preventing reboots
during the installation of deployment images.

All of the above products may require reboot after installation, however

MSI Issues: MSI 3.0 v2, shipped with Inventor 10, supports all languages
that Autodesk supports.
If an Autodesk Vault Server appears to conflict with the MSI installed
on workstations, please double check that the instructions were followed
correctly while setting up the server. A user error
in this process has caused the
MSI
installer
on workstations
on the same domain to not work.
Service Pack Issues: Autodesk service packs are
distributed as .exe files. The Network Installation wizard, needs a .msp
file for the
patch.
To extract a .msp version of
the patch from the .exe:
- Copy the service pack to x:\Temp. Where "x" is the drive you have
selected to use.
- Do not type the quotes in the following.
- From the start menu, select Run and type "cmd"
- Type "x:"
- Type "cd \"
- Type "cd \temp"
- Type:
"Inventor10_ais_SP1.exe
/e
Inventor10_ais_SP1.msp".
This will place the msp version of the patch in your x:\temp folder.
- Rule: File names with spaces must be enclosed with double quotes.
Inventor service packs are not independently self contained (as are AutoCAD
based service packs). They are "historical". That is, each one
must be applied in sequence. When building a deployment image for say SP
2 of a given release.
- Create a new base deployment image, adding the Service Pack as a patch.
This produces the SP1 state.
- To create SP2, modify the just created SP1 deployment image to create
a fully deployment image with both SP1 and SP2.
- Additional modify steps are required for additional service packs.
- For the Autodesk Inventor® Professional product, the same process
must be followed to create the deployment image for the AIP modules.
For the AutoCAD based products, just build a deployment image from the distributed
media + the current service pack. Repeat this process for each new service
pack.
System Requirements Before Installation
Use Windows update to install MSI 3.1 V2 or later. Since
the Autodesk R10 AIS and AIP media was pressed, Microsoft has managed to introduce
a problem in their MSI 3 installer and then a fix for the problem. To make
sure that you are not using the problem version of the installer, in Internet
Explorer,
go to Tools > Windows
Update. After windows update initializes, select "Custom Install" You
will see a High Priority update of "Microsoft
Windows Installer 3.1" if it
is not
yet installed. Failure to do this may damage the MSI
installer on your system. This issue has only been seen on a small number
of systems.
Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional SP4 or Microsoft
Windows XP Professional Sp1 or SP2. As a practical matter, all critical
updates from Microsoft (including office products) should be installed before
contacting Autodesk for
support.
Updating workstations to current Microsoft levels will usually avoid installation
problems and increase security.
If the Content Center is to be installed on your local system, file
and printer sharing MUST be enabled. Search on "file and printer sharing" in windows help
for information on how to do this.
Autodesk Inventor software may be shipped in DVD format. If you would like
CD format, fill out the business reply card and send it back to us for fulfillment.
Future releases will be on DVD format by default.
Please refer to http://www.autodesk.com/inventor-graphic-cards (this
site) for the latest information about graphic cards and drivers.
An Internet connection is required for internet downloads and Subscription
Aware access.
Microsoft Excel 2000 or later is required for iParts, iFeatures, thread customization,
and spread sheet driven designs.
NetMeeting 3.01 or later for web collaboration
Installs on New systems: These may have an installation error, because
a reboot has been suppressed in our installation script. Workarounds: 1) Reboot
and try again. 2) Install the needed items from the list the Special
Install Situations section, in order. If asked to reboot, do so.
Microsoft
recommends that the size of the virtual memory swap file should be set
to twice the size of the physical memory in the system. If your are using
the
/3GB
option
on
Windows
XP, SP1+ Pro,
the size of the swap file should be set to 4GB.
Microsoft Internet Explorer version 6.0, SP1. (Note that Autodesk Inventor® Help
and tutorials may require Windows Update 811630 to repair script errors.)
After installation, a workspace of 1GB minimum is required for the Undo file
and other Autodesk Inventor® temporary files. The default location is defined
by your TEMP environment variable. You can change this location by
running Autodesk Inventor® and
changing the location of the Undo file. Actions, such as repair, related to
the SQL data base for the Content Center may require a TEMP space up to 3 times
the size of the database file (3 x 1.2GB).
When removing Autodesk Inventor®, if you have just recently run the application,
you may get a message that the Remove function cannot be performed because
cdilla10.exe (or cdilla64.exe) is still running. Exit the Remove function and
wait several minutes for cdilla10 and cdilla64 to unload,
and then try again. If this fails, you may need to logout or restart your system
before you can remove Autodesk Inventor®.

Graphics Requirements Before Installation
Graphics card and driver information can be found at:
http://www.autodesk.com/us/inventor/graphic_cards/
Crash on file open/new with NVIDIA graphics cards: Inventor
R10 will
crash or have other fatal problems when creating the first graphics window
using a Nvidia driver from 6.14.10.5214 to 6.14.10.6720 inclusive of both
ends.
The problem is worse on some systems than others.
These drivers are rated RED - Do not use. Inventor will switch to GDI Generic
emulation mode
for these
drivers.
ATI graphics cards: For Inventor 10, the "Autodesk
Inventor" setting has some serious problems, especially when using the "Content
Center" or "Autodesk Inventor Studio". The default setting
is even worse. Testing with driver package version 8.083... (6.14.10.6497)
or 8.103... (6.14.10.6521)
has shown that the
AutoCAD
application
setting does not have these problems. All existing ATIU drivers require this
change.
Laptops with ATI graphics: If "Enable POWERPLAY(tm)" is checked,
graphics hardware acceleration is lost when running on battery power. Inventor
reverts to software emulation to run the graphics.
Matrox: At this time. Matrox does not have a working driver
for Autodesk Inventor® Professional 10 Products. Matrox drivers are rated
Yellow (information) as they still work with Autodesk Inventor® Series.
Modern workstation graphics cards require 32-bit color (true color) to enable
hardware acceleration. The performance of Autodesk Inventor® depends on
the graphics card hardware acceleration. For additional information about hardware
issues and tips, explore this site.
Installation Issues?
Hijackers: Some search tools like NTsearch.com and coolwebsearch are in reality Hijackers that take over parts of your system. NTsearch prevents
any MSI installer,
like the ones from Autodesk, from running.
If you don't have enough space on the OS drive for MS SQL (MSDE) and
the OS drive is NTFS, you can mount a new drive partition under Program
Files\Microsoft SQL Server while this is still an empty directory. This
will logically become part of the OS drive. The fact that it may be physically
a different drive, will be transparent to the software. I tested a size
of 5GB.
If MSDE_CC (MSQL for Content Center) does not install:
SubAware workaround for standalone Inventor
10 network install: If Inventor was installed directly for the supplied media
as a network installation,
there
is no place to enter the required serial number. Please use Regedit to
enter the serial number. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Autodesk\Inventor\RegistryVersion10.0\System\License.
Locate <Path>\Inventor.exe:SerialNumber and enter the correct serial number.
How can I put the content of my Media
on a server for use by others?
- For DVD media: Make a directory with the same name as the DVD properties
(Inv1_Series10 or Inv1_Pro10) and copy the contents of the DVD to
it.
- For AIS on CD media: Make a directory Inv1_series10. Under this
directory, make a directory for each CD (except Inv2_series10 and
Inv3_Series10_CC), with the same name as shown in explorer properties
(Inv1_series10, ACADM2006_MDT, Vault4). Next copy the contents of
each CD to it's directory. For Inv2 & 3 navigate to bin >acadfeui
> cabs
and
copy
all of the
cab
files
to
the same
directory under Inv1_series10 directory on the server.
- For AIP on CD media: Do the same as step 2, except "Series" becomes
"Pro". (Inv1_Pro10, Inv4_Pro, ACADM2006_MDTPro, Vault4)
and a new one is added for the modules (Inv4_Pro10)
Peripherals
IOmega: Do not eject the zip drive while Autodesk Inventor is running.
If your Logitech mouse is slow when Autodesk Inventor® has the focus,
check your mouse setup in the control panel. If you have a check box
labeled: "Disable acceleration in games," clear the check mark.
The driver is treating all OpenGL applications as games.
General information for using Inventor
As part of our Continuous Improvement process, Inventor contains a Customer
Error Reporting (CER) system. When Inventor has an abnormal termination,
you will be prompted to
send a mini dump to Autodesk. To do this, you must have an internet connection.
Please include an email address to enable the Rapid
Response Team at Autodesk to contact you if they need more information.
Autodesk Inventor® 10 (Series and Professional) stores the prior versions
of a document as separate files in a folder called "OldVersions" located in
the same directory as the current document.
The resolution of images inserted into sketches depends on the
display resolution. If the display is set to 16 bits, a full
color image can degrade significantly. For best results,
use 32-bit resolution.
Temporary files may remain on your system after a process is terminated.
Monitor your default windows working directory (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp)
and clean it out as needed.
