50. Best Practices for stable graphics and performance

These changes to you system will improve performance and reduce graphics problems. They are used on all workstations and graphics cards that are certified for Inventor.

Optimize Windows XP for Performance:

  1. Open "Control Panel" from the start menu
  2. Click on "System"
  3. Click on the "Advanced" tab
  4. Click on the Performance "Settings" button
  5. On the "Visual Effects" tab, click on the "Adjust for best Performance" radio button.
  6. On the "Advanced" tab, make sure that "Programs" are selected for both items.
  7. (On Windows 2000, the "Advanced Tab, click on the "Performance Options" and verify that "Applications" have priority and the size of the Virtual Memory Swap file is 2GB.)
  8. Verify that the paging file size is 2GB or larger. (4GB is required if the "/3GB" option is to be used.)

This will give about a 10% overall performance increase. It makes the windows on your screen look simpler (like Windows 2000). One does pay a price for the fancy 3D looking windows borders etc. This increases windows XP performance back to the level of Windows 2000. This also reduces the load on the graphics card. It actually removes problems that Inventor has with low end cards, especially the Intel embedded chipset.

Other graphics performance optimization

  1. On the display background, right click and select "Properties"
  2. Click on the :Effects" tab
  3. Clear all checkboxes

This has also been found to reduce graphics problems, especially with non-CAD supported graphics cards.

Note: It is highly recommended that you download and install the driver certified on this web site before reporting problems.
